THE RCCDN MESSAGE ON WORLD WETLANDS DAY

Rwanda like other countries all over the world celebrates International Wetlands Day on 2nd February. For this year, the Rwanda Climate Change and Development Network Coordinator together with the entire staff and network members have a specific message to deliver.

Rwanda Climate Change and Development Network appreciates the commitment of Rwandans in taking urgent actions to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. For this year, the RCCDN Coordinator together with the entire staff and network members have a specific message to deliver.

With that being said, as this year’s international wetlands day theme states “It’s time for wetland restoration,” the RCCDN and the mentioned urge all the citizens of Rwanda to restore and protect the wetlands as a natural mechanism to cope with climate change, one of the most pressing problems facing humanity and our planet.

The wetlands contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation through carbon sequestration and storage, and moderation of extreme events such as floods and droughts. They also help provision water for irrigation, increasing crop yields two to threefold, contributing to the well-being of domestic households and commercial enterprises (REMA/BIOFIN 2019).

RCCDN urges everyone to protect Wetlands

International Wetlands Day was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar where a convention on wetlands was signed on 2nd February 1971.

LET’S PROTECT OUR WETLANDS AS A NEXUS TO BIODIVERSITY RESTORATION.
